God called us to plant a life-giving church that would love and make authentic disciples out of Dallas’ most distressed, indebted and discontented people.  But where in Dallas do these people reside?  We felt led by the Holy Spirit to visit South Dallas.  We rode down Martin Luther King Blvd, which is near Fair Park. It was a Saturday afternoon.

As we strolled and prayed, we saw a woman sleeping on the ground.  People ignored her, but my husband stopped the car and asked her name.  She said, Sylvia. He told her Christ loved her.  She wasn’t receptive, becoming belligerent.  She cursed and screamed: “What has Jesus done for me lately.”

Compassion filled our hearts.  We had found Dallas’ most distressed, indebted and discontented people.  It was confirmation that South Dallas was the community God wanted us to plant Saltmakers Church.  Ironically, we realized God had been familiarizing us with South Dallas and preparing us to serve its residents through our professional careers.

How is Saltmakers Church Showing the Love of Christ and Advancing God’s Kingdom in South Dallas?

  1. Several weeks after encountering Sylvia we fed the homeless in South Dallas every Monday evening.  We have temporarily stopped this ministry since the city of Dallas has again displaced the homeless population from their normal locations to prepare for the Texas State Fair, and we’re trying to reconnect with them.
  2. We participated in an Operation Beautification campaign sponsored by the City of Dallas. Periodically, we pick up trash in South Dallas to serve and help improve the appearance of the community.
  3. We participated in the 2017 Juneteenth Festival and Back to School event sponsored by the MLK Jr. Community Center in South Dallas.  At the back to school event, we distributed school supplies to needy children as they returned to school.
  4. We conduct the Know Christ, No Religion Discipleship Course every Saturday morning at 11:00 am at the downtown Dallas Public Library. Participants report that the classes are strengthening their relationship with the Lord. There are lots of food, fun, and fellowship at each class.
  5. We established a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation called the Texas Urban Renewal Network (TURN). The mission of TURN is to help South Dallas become a safe, prosperous, and self-sufficient community. TURN is pursuing grants to help with our outreach efforts.
